david carson's business card, made with letterpress, 400 of these were printed and each one
-different & unique
I learned about David Carson a few years ago when I decided to study graphic design. His designs were considered bold, revolutionary, experimental. For sure I didn't understand many of them but they still spoke to me. On Wednesday, my friend Marina + I, had the opportunity to greet + welcome David to Telmö Dice.
the first talk
During his visit, the vibe was great. People were taking photos + asking questions. He was inspiring to be around, talk to + learn from. A great opportunity for all students and other speakers to meet him. He keeps traveling around the world, giving design talks + workshops. Currently based in Amsterdam, in the last year he's been focusing on making collages, using his floor as a creative field. Self-taught, grid-free and very funny, he is not afraid to speak his mind.

In the Escuela De Arte San Telmö, the excitement from the audience + David's presence was through the roof!
It was very curious to learn what inspires David!
the presentation showed him not just as a great designer,

but as human with a great sense of humour.
His presence around definitely left me motivated + energised!!

MESSAGES

This is how the presentation on Thursday started:
There was no translator from English to Spanish. Maybe some people didn't understand everything because of the language.

However, they all reacted to the content.

"The fact that you can create a lot of reaction just based on the way you arranged things, shows that design is such a powerful language."

Ushould always question whether the design sends the right

message.

Nobody can copy what you see and what catches your attention
Everybody can buy the same software

NOBODy has your background,
upbringing+
ur whole life experience

nobodY can copy that

a sign
ask yourself, does it communicate the right message

?
After 5 years of studies in sociology+ teaching for a while,
graphic design came as a second profession
A summer course was enough to change his career.

-the Message is clear
working with texture, weight + even smell
it makes the work more
unique.

don't be a lazy designer. everybody can buy the software
look for the inspiration in your environment, he says
look for what is here, because nobody can copy what U see +
what catches your attention. !

So much
of design is just noticing
your
surroundINGS

Just because your work is readable
doesn't mean
it sends the right message.
?
Designers got
LA-zy
computers set the grids
DON'T just google

What is the message your work sends BEFORE
somebody starts reading

+ is it consistent?
don't use
